The Legend, Karl Lagerfeld

Born in 1933, Karl Otto Lagerfelt (no that’s not a spelling error, he later changed it to Lagerfeld as he felt it had more of a ring to it) into a wealthy family consisting of a German father and Swedish mother (what an interesting mix) and also two older sisters.

At the age of 14, he was studying art and history in Paris (fancy) and later became the design assistant for Pierre Balmain, and Jean Patou’s haute couture line. He’s also designed a variety of costumes for famous theatre productions and, get this, he knows 7 languages. I can barely speak 2 and here’s Karl being all cool with his 7 languages. Lagerfeld’s art and history studies didn’t go to waste as he also owns a bookstore in Paris which features books about his art and photography.

Ok so, he’s worked for Balmain, Jean Patou, Krizia, Charles Jourdan, Valentino, Fendi AND Chloe before joining Chanel in 1983. A year later he produced his own line after his name and believed that his collection would reflect “intellectual sexiness” (basically, sexy, smart but chic).

He’s also released a book called “The Karl Lagerfeld Diet” (very original with the name there Karl) which was inspired by himself after he lost a dramatic 90lbs. Mr Lagerfeld believes that “fashion is the healthiest motivation for losing weight.” Erm, I hope he’s not encouraging anorexia.

In 2011 he designed Lilly Allen’s evening dress for her wedding (what a lucky lady!) In the same year he also designed glasswares for Swedish company Orrefors. Wow, he does a bit of everything, doesn’t he?

Now, lets talk a bit about where he’s gone wrong in his career. In 1993, he designed a collection for Fendi which was presented at Milan Fashion Week. However, Anna Wintour (US Vogue’s editor in chief) walked out of his show after he hired strippers and Moanna Pozzi (a well known porn star) to walk his catwalk dressed in the black and white collection. Yeaaaaah…not very classy of you Karl..

As much as I love the fashion industry, I find real animal fur creepy and believe it’s time we’ve stopped killing animals for clothes. Karl Lagerfeld however, believes that it’s ridiculous to discuss banning fur as he states that huntersmake a living having learnt nothing else than hunting, killing those beasts who would kill us if they could.” (He, himself, doesn’t wear fur). I think he has a point though, if we wear leather then why is fur any different? However, I personally believe that we should only use the fur of animals that have already died. (Others may disagree so don’t attack me)

In 2012 he was forced to apologise to Adele for calling her fat. Yeah, come on Karl, that’s not nice at all. Not cool. Seems like he was having his man-periods in 2012 as he also ‘dissed’ Pippa Middleton’s face (yes, the famous butt lady) After praising The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton‘s style and looks, he added: I don’t like the sister’s face. She should only show her back.” (To be honest, I don’t see the fascination with her butt anyway…)

His designs have taken Chanel’s couture and ready-to-wear (RTW) lines to a new level by amazing us on every unique catwalk. However, I do think he overuses black and white too much. I mean, I absolutely love black and white but it’s getting kind of repetitive Karl. I want to see Chanel going to extremes with colour for once. You have got to love his prestige presence though. He is a walking icon.
